The Georgia State women’s golf team, following one tournament, is optimistic about the season as they work to defend their CAA Championship title.

The team has already competed in one tournament, the Hurricane Invitational in Miami, where they took first of 17 teams on both the first and second day. The third day the team finished second, by one shot, of 17 teams. They will compete again March 1 and 2 at the UCF Invitational. The team will be defending their CAA Championship title this year in mid-April at the championships. This year’s championships will be held in Virginia.

“I am excited about this year and the talent on the team,” Mant said.

The women’s team is led by seniors Nicole Loesch of South Africa and Cathrine Madsen of Denmark. Madsen has been named to the first team All-CAA once and second team All-CAA twice. Loesch has been named to the CAA All-tournament team as well as leading the team with a stroke average of 78.17. So far this season, sophomore Cherishton Brett leads the team with a stroke average of 88.33. The team is very international according to Coach Cathy Mant. Of the seven players, six are from outside of the U.S.

Last season the team won six of their 10 tournaments where they competed against at least 10 teams in each one.

Due to the inclement weather so far, the team hasn’t been able to practice as much as they would like; however, Mant is pleased with the amount of effort the girls have put in. They are all working out two times a week and practicing about 20 hours a week on top of their school work. Their goals for the season are to defend their CAA title and beat teams that are nationally ranked. The University of Florida, University of Georgia, East Tennessee State and University of North Carolina-Wilmington are teams they are aiming to beat.

The women’s golf team will host the 2010 John Kirk/Panther Collegiate at home March 22-23. Last year they beat 13 teams to win this tournament. The team practices and plays at Eagles Landing Country Club in Stockbridge and invites the Georgia State community to come watch them play.
