The Georgia State Baseball team (0-3) opened their season this weekend dropping three straight games to the #5 ranked team in the nation, the Florida State Seminoles.

The Panthers opener took place Friday down in Florida on Mike Martin Field.

Georgia State started the game off well, but several mistakes made it easier for the Seminoles to cruise to an 11-3 win.

The Panthers found themselves up 2-0 heading into the bottom of the third. Head Coach Greg Frady said he likes what he saw early.

“I was happy about the start of the game, Frady said. “We were able to establish some things, score a few runs and take the lead.”

The Seminoles responded by taking advantage of Georgia State’s mistakes, scoring nine unanswered runs.

“The story of tonight’s game is that we just walked too many people and gave up too much free stuff like a costly error or a passed ball,” Frady said.

The Panthers pitching staff struggled walking 12 batters and earning only 4 strikeouts.
Saturday marked the second game of the three game series.

Georgia State’s mistakes proved to be a theme once again as the Panthers came up short 14-7.

Frady said although the team lost, he feels good about some of the things he saw.
“We are always disappointed to lose a game, but today was a tremendous growth for the team, Frady said. “We did a lot of good things today and were very competitive.”

Junior transfer Mark Micowski had a good day for the Panthers going 3-5 and scoring two runs. Jayce Boyd led the way for the Seminoles also going 3-5 and scoring two runs.

Saturday’s game remained close early as the Panthers scored five runs in the top of the fourth inning to tie the game at six.

The Seminoles were once again able to string together runs allowing them to take a 12-6 lead into the top of the eighth.

The final game of the series took place Sunday. Unlike the first two games of the season, the Seminoles jumped out to an early lead.

Justin Gonzales’ two-run homerun in the bottom of the fourth ballooned the FSU lead over the scoreless Panthers to six.

Georgia State’s only two runs came in the top of the fifth. The Seminoles went on to win the game 12-2.

“When you play a team as good as Florida State, especially one that is as good as they are this year, you are going to face tremendous challenges, as we did all weekend,” Frady said.

The Georgia State home opener will take place Tuesday February 23 at Panthersville as they are set to take on USC-upstate. The team will head up to Spartanburg, South Carolina on Wednesday to take on USC-upstate again.
