This holiday season marks the start of a new winter tradition here in Atlanta. The Central Atlanta Progress and the Atlanta Downtown Improvement District are putting on the first ever Downtown Holiday Adventure, a 50-day promotional showcase featuring Downtown Atlanta events and attractions.

The program began on November 14, 2009 and will continue through January 3, 2010.  Events include live music, outdoor ice-skating, and the annual Atlanta Ballet’s performance of the Nutcracker.

Attractions and discounts are a part of the program, as well. The VSA Arts of Georgia is hosting an “Arts for All” gallery now through December 23, featuring discount holiday prices on fine arts, handcrafted items, origami, jewelry, textiles, stained glass, and more.

The Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta is hosting a Christmas Parade on December 5, after which attendees can visit The Mall at Peachtree Center for a complimentary picture with Santa Clause.

The Georgia Aquarium, Toys for Tots, the Glenn Hotel, Centennial Park, Chick-fil-A, amongst many other partners, will all be a part of the Downtown Holiday Adventure.
Georgia State University will be taking part in the Downtown Holiday Adventure, as well.

The Georgia State School of Music and the Rialto Center for the Arts will be hosting their annual Gala Holiday Concert on December 5 and December 6 at 8:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m., respectively. The event will take place at the Rialto Center for the Arts.

The Gala will provide campus organizations, such as the University Symphony Orchestra, Chorus, and Jazz Band with an opportunity to showcase their talents to fellow students and the local community. The event will begin with an art exhibit and soothing brass quintet setting the scene as guests come into the lobby.

Although this will be the 12th annual Gala, this year the Rialto and the School of Music plan on adding some international flavors to celebrate and reflect the diversity of Georgia State students and Atlanta residents.

The performances are not limited to students and faculty; the Atlanta community will also be performing at the Gala. The Cao Ying Dance School will be performing a traditional Chinese dance called avalokitesvara. Students from the Charles Drew R. Charter School will be performing a traditional dance from Guinea, West Africa called kakilambe.

The international flavor does not end there. The Gala will conclude with Handel’s Hallelujah Chorus leading the audience in a sing-along of Sim Shalom, a Hebrew song of peace. Tickets range from $35-$51, with a student discount available. Tickets are on sale now at www.rialtocenter.org.
