On Monday, Feb. 1, the second week of the Homecoming season got off to a great start with Amateur Night. Amateur Night was an evening for students to showcase their talents, cheer on their favorite performers and to have a good time.
Every seat in the room was filled almost an hour before the show and the event certainly did not disappoint the large audience.
Ryan Kulp, a student and Spotlight member performed with his live band. They got the night off to a great start with a cover of “Empire State of Mind,” originally sung by rapper Jay-Z and singer Alicia Keys.
Kulp then took out his acoustic guitar and performed an original song of his own. Although many would have considered Kulp a tough act to follow, the rest of the performers were not a let down and kept the crowd on the edge of their seats.
Chad Hampton served as emcee for that night and he was just as entertaining with his witty commentary and humorous advice for the crowd on subjects like nightclub etiquette. Hampton even gave the crowd a taste of his own talent by giving a brief performance of Usher’s “Nice and Slow”.
The second performance and one of the crowd favorites was violinist D Sharp. D Sharp used his decorative blue violin to play a few popular mainstream songs, the first being “What’s Up,” by rap group Rich Kidz followed by rapper Wacka Flocka Flame’s “O Let’s Do It”. Travis Porter’s “Turnt Up”, was the last song D Sharp performed and was the favorite piece of the whole set. This selection had the audience jumping out of their seats and sing along as he played. As the night progressed, more exciting talent stepped on the stage.
Student Carlena Prophet graced the audience with a stirring rendition of Chrisette Michele’s “Golden”.
Fountain Heads was another unforgettable act of the evening. The group was able to excite the crowd with their rock/hip hop sound and enthralling energy. Following Fountain Heads was poet Zamir Green who recited one of his popular love poems to please the crowd, especially the ladies. Lastly, there was rapper Frenchie whose unique style and attitude fascinated the crowd.
The Caribbean Student Association also produced a skit that was a combination of humor and inspiration with a fictional beauty pageant with representatives from a few Caribbean countries.
The audience was also treated to a little divine inspiration in the form of a performance by The Preacher’s Kids. Other acts included dancing vixens Blush and rapper Fabio, know best for his single “Jiggy Mama”.
The highlight of the night was the friendly rivalry between Georgia State’s two non-Greek step teams, the all male Peerless Perfection (P2) and the all female Quiet Storm Steppers. P2 took the stage first with a thundering American Bandstand themed performance that left the crowd in awe. Quiet Storm followed with a creative contemporary “Wizard of Oz” theme act and a cameo from some of the brothers of Omega Psi Phi. Both teams were fairly impressive but the judges preferred P2 and rewarded them with the first place trophy. The students in attendance seemed to agree with the judges’ decision. One student remarked, “Less skit, more stepping!”
The judges also rewarded others according to the type of talent they performed. D. Sharp won for Musical Talent, Blush won for Performing Arts, and Zamir Green won the Artistic Talent category. Ultimately, Georgia State’s Homecoming Amateur Night was a great success and it set the precedent for the whole second week of Georgia State’s last winter Homecoming season.
